Honoring the pioneering legacy of female leadership and empowerment on Nantucket, join us to celebrate women in the food and wine world who have been trailblazers and broke barriers in the male-dominated industry through innovation, mentorship, and by redefining professional techniques.
Nantucket has long been shaped by strong women. During the whaling era, while men were at sea, Nantucket women held power of attorney and ran the island. Perhaps the most iconic Nantucket women leader being Maria Mitchell (1818–1889). She was a trailblazing American astronomer who broke significant gender barriers in the 19th century. She discovered a comet, was the first woman to receive the Astronomy Gold Medal, was an advocate for equal pay upon becoming the first astronomy professor at Vassar College in 1865, and she was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, amongst other things.
In a similar spirit, and at a similar time in history, Madame Clicquot (Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin) who took over the struggling business from her late husband and brought it to the highest acclaim through innovation, marketing and international expansion at a time when there were no women in the wine industry. She was nicknamed “La Grande Dame of Champagne”. “Veuve” means “widow” in French.
Both of these women were leaders during a time when female leadership was rare. Both combined intellectual rigor with bold innovation. And both reshaped their industries while paving the way for generations of women to follow.
Join us for lively discussion led by Moderator Wanda Mann and enjoy a lovely lobster luncheon featuring three highly acclaimed women chefs and three exceptional vintages of Veuve Clicquot, including La Grande Dame. Dine alongside women vintners, chefs, and sommeliers, and engage with thought leaders who are redefining the food and wine world—while reflecting on the enduring legacy of female leadership that has long defined Nantucket.
