Markus Huber

Owner & Winemaker

Weingut Markus Huber
Traisental, Austria

Markus Huber is among Austria’s most celebrated winemakers, renowned for his precision, elegance, and commitment to crafting wines that express the unique terroir of the Traisental region. Raised in Reichersdorf, Austria, Markus grew up in a family with over 220 years of winemaking tradition. While his early dreams revolved around a professional soccer career, his passion for viticulture ultimately led him to study at the Federal College of Viticulture and Pomology in Klosterneuburg.

.

Seeking to expand his expertise beyond Austria, Markus gained international winemaking experience at prestigious wineries such as Mittelback, Jurtschitsch, and Bründlmayer in Austria, as well as Kaapzicht, Spiceroute, and Lammershoek in South Africa. In 2000, he returned home to take over his family’s four-hectare estate, transforming it into one of Austria’s most respected wineries.

.

Markus’ wines have received widespread acclaim for their clarity, minerality, and balance. In 2015, he was awarded Austria’s prestigious Falstaff “Winemaker of the Year” title, solidifying his status as a leader in the country’s modern wine movement. Under his guidance, Weingut Markus Huber has continued to garner top international honors, including several 100-point scores by James Suckling, and his Grüner Veltliner and Riesling have become benchmarks for Austrian winemaking excellence.

.

When he’s not in the vineyards or the cellar, Markus enjoys spending time with his wife, Edith, and their four children. He remains committed to organic and sustainable farming, believing deeply in the philosophy: “In nature we trust.”
